How to Prepare for Your Plastic Surgery Consultation

The first big step toward achieving your cosmetic goals with plastic surgery is to meet with a plastic surgeon for an in-person consultation. The goal of this informative appointment is to ensure your surgeon is qualified and makes you feel comfortable, and to educate yourself about your desired procedure.

To help you get the most out of this appointment, Charles S. Lee, MD of Enhance® Medical Center recommends you do the following:

Do Your Homework

Having a basic understanding of your desired procedure will help you have a more meaningful conversation with your surgeon. Prior to your appointment, set aside some time to research the procedure you want and list out any related questions and concerns you want to discuss with the doctor.

Think About Your Goals

You should go into your plastic surgery consultation with a specific idea of what you want to look like after surgery. You might want to jot down some notes about what you want to change about your appearance, or bring in a few pictures of your “ideal look” to help communicate these goals to your surgeon.

Consider Bringing a Loved One

Some plastic surgery candidates find it helpful to bring a loved one to the consultation to act as a second set of ears; others prefer to attend the consultation alone. If you think you might forget to ask your surgeon some critical questions, or you want some moral support, arrange to bring a family member, close friend or significant other.

Be Prepared to Discuss Your Medical History

Your plastic surgeon will take a detailed medical history and ask you about any current medications to ensure proper planning and safety. You might find it helpful to prepare a list of medications, vitamins or supplements you take, and to write down any information pertinent to your medical history, such as medical problems that run in your immediate family.

Dress Appropriately

If you are interested in having a breast or body procedure, you will probably need to undress at some point during the consultation for an examination. Dress in clothing that will make it easy and comfortable to disrobe and put on a patient gown. If you are considering breast implants, you might want to bring a few bathing suit tops or tank tops to wear while trying on different implant sizers.

Have Your Schedule Handy

You should never feel pressured or rushed into booking surgery on the spot However, if you feel confident moving forward with surgery, it helps to have your calendar and availability handy to look at prospective dates with the scheduling team.
