Is Surgery Necessary To Treat Stubborn Fat?

Fat Removal in Beverly Hills

No matter how much you diet and exercise, there are certain fat pockets that just won’t go away. Is there a way to get rid of this annoying fat without undergoing surgery? Dr. Charles S. Lee of Enhance® Medical Center in Beverly Hills discusses alternatives to surgery for treating stubborn fat.

Stubborn Fat

Perhaps you don’t really need to lose weight, but your healthy diet and exercise regimen just won’t eliminate certain bulges. Stubborn subcutaneous fat generally consists of love handles, and fat in the buttocks, lower back and abdomen that doesn’t vanish no matter how hard you try.

The fat in these areas contains high amounts of alpha receptors. These are designed to store energy for later use but aren’t designed to lose fat easily. Overall, these areas of stubborn fat receive less blood flow, making them less receptive to the benefits of exercise for weight loss.

While surgery can eradicate stubborn fat pockets, even procedures like liposuction require downtime which can prove hard to arrange for someone with a busy lifestyle. Fortunately, there are non-surgical alternatives for ridding yourself of stubborn fat.

CoolSculpting

Formally known as cryolipolysis, FDA-approved CoolSculpting treats stubborn fat by freezing fat cells and breaking them down. It can destroy between 20 and 25 percent of fat cells in the treatment area. CoolSculpting can’t remove large amounts of fat, but it can help you lose 5 to 10 pounds of stubborn fat pockets, reshaping the target area. You’ll notice a slimmer profile or body contour.

CoolSculpting Procedure

After applying gel to protect the skin, special devices are used to cool skin to just above freezing in the treatment area(s). Depending on the targeted fat, the devices are applied to the skin for between 30 minutes and two hours. Most patients need two to three treatment sessions.

During treatment, the CoolSculpting applicators adhere to the body. Expect to hear a slight sucking sound, followed by coolness. After detaching the applicators, the doctor massages the area to encourage fat cell break up.

Kybella

Dealing with a double chin? Get rid of that unsightliness with Kybella. Consisting of deoxycholic acid, a natural substance in the body, Kybella absorbs and destroys fat cells. These fat cells no longer accumulate in the treated area.

At each visit, patients receive 12 to 50 Kybella injections. Treatment usually requires four to six 15-minute treatment sessions, scheduled every four to six weeks. While patients must complete the entire regimen, results are apparent by the third or fourth session.
