Undereye Bags: Causes and Treatments

Male Facelift in Beverly Hills

Are noticeable undereye bags making you look chronically tired or frazzled, even after a good night’s sleep? Charles S. Lee, MD and the team of skin care experts at Enhance® Medical Center can help. We offer a variety of methods to minimize the appearance of undereye bags and help you reclaim a rested, youthful appearance.

Why Do Undereye Bags Form?

There are several factors to blame for undereye bags.

Sometimes undereye bags are genetic. If your mother’s or father’s side of the family has a history of noticeable bags, you are more likely to get them.

Another culprit is the natural aging process. As we age, the tissues and muscles supporting our eyelids weaken and the skin loses its youthful elasticity and sags. The fat around our eyes becomes displaced, creating contour irregularities. Age-related volume loss around the cheeks can accentuate the hollowness under the eyes.

Lifestyle or environmental factors can also contribute to the problem. Smoking, alcohol consumption, dehydration, allergies, lack of sleep or rapid weight loss can worsen the appearance of undereye bags.

Treatment Solutions

As you may have discovered, topical creams or serums are virtually useless in reducing the appearance of undereye bags. You need the expertise of Dr. Lee and our skin care team to address the anatomical issues causing the bags. Depending on the specific problem and your goals of treatment, we may recommend one of a few treatment solutions.

Injectable fillers are a safe and minimally invasive treatment option. When injected into the undereye area with a small needle, the filler provides subtle volume to smooth out the contour irregularity and soften the appearance of the bags. Filler injections usually take 30 minutes or less and can be performed in our office. Depending on the specific filler product, the results can last a few months up to a year or more, and repeat treatment is necessary to maintain the effects.

If your undereye bags are very prominent, we may recommend lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). During the procedure, Dr. Lee repositions displaced fat, tightens the tissues and skin and eliminates loose, saggy skin to smooth and tighten the entire undereye area. Blepharoplasty is a lasting solution to undereye bags and, unlike fillers, does not require any repeat or touch-up treatment.
